AED Recycling Options
AEDs, AED batteries and AED electrodes are like computers, TVs and other consumer electronics. They should be disposed of and/or recycled according to federal, state and local regulations. Recycling is a great way to conserve resources and natural materials. Certain items also may be eligible for a future product purchase credit from First Voice!
Returning AEDs and Batteries to First Voice for Recycling
If you would like to send your AED and/or batteries to First Voice for disposal through our contracted recycler, we would be happy to assist you. Our support staff will need the following information for the products you wish to dispose of:
- Quantity
- Type of item(s) you are disposing
Once the information is setup in our system our support representative will provide you detailed instructions and a shipping address.
Please note: Customers are responsible for all packaging material and the transport costs involved with shipping items to First Voice for recycling. All shipments incoming from clients must have an assigned Shipment tracking number from our customer support department in order to properly credit any client account. Batteries are considered a hazardous material with special shipping requirements. First Voice can provide you with shipping label special hazard identification decals and instructions but it is your duty to consult with your shipping company regarding proper shipment details.

AED Sunsets
AED Sunsets (also called "End of Life"), refers to an AED model being discontinued by the manufacturer. This simply means that they will no longer provide support for that particular device.
AED Recalls
All major AED manufacturers and their models have had software or hardware upgrades through FDA field corrective actions or FDA equipment recall notices. Extend the life of your AED as much as possible through our comprehensive database of AED recalls and updates available (most of which are free).
What Is a Re-Cell Battery Pack?
AED battery packs consist primarily of 2 components:
- Lithium battery cells which are common and used in many products.
- Plastic housing around the cells. The plastic housing component is what is installed in AEDs. Recycling / “Re-Cell” simply means opening the housing and replacing the lithium cells within a battery housing with new cells. The new cells are the exact type and brand that were used originally by the AED manufacturer. The original battery housing can then be recycled multiple times and the battery housing reused several times.
Re-Cell batteries are recycled battery housing (plastic around the battery cells inside) where the housing is opened; old cells removed; new cells installed; and the housing resealed, under FDA approved procedures.
