CPR, First Aid and Emergency Response Related Curriculum History and Facts:

The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) was formed in 1992 to provide a forum for the coordination of cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation worldwide. This scientific body is currently made up of representatives from the American Heart Association, the European Resuscitation Council, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation, the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa, and the InterAmerican Heart Foundation.

In 2000, ILCOR, in collaboration with the American Heart Association, produced the first international CPR guidelines. In 2005, ILCOR again convened a group of internationally recognized experts from a variety of countries, cultures, and disciplines to “evaluate and form an expert consensus on all peer-reviewed scientific studies related to CPR and ECC (emergency cardiovascular care).” The recommendations that resulted from this group\’s work are published in The 2005 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR); more commonly known as 2005 ECC Guidelines.

All of the above organizations and many others sit on the National First Aid Science Advisory Board This board is helping to ensure proper First Aid techniques are researched to assist in the improvement of outcomes for patients or victims. Unlike the realm of CPR, no single consensus document exists that establishes First Aid training program guidelines; however American Heart Association (AHA) is the main research organization on first aid topics in the United States. Since there are no “national consensus guidelines” often times AHA protocols are followed by many major training organizations. In 2004, the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross collaborated to form the 2005 Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations for First Aid. There are a few subtle differences in major training organization first aid procedure recommendations however and Think Safe is knowledgeable of these differences and why they exist. Think Safe can help you decide what training organization best meets your organization needs.

OSHA also requires that employers shall ensure that all employees with occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (bloodborne pathogen exposure or BBP exposure) participate in a training program which must be provided at no cost to the employee and during working hours. Our recommendations will meet or exceed OSHA and other industry mandates for bloodborne pathogens (BBP) training recommendations as summarized in OSHA 1910.1030(g)(2).
