OSHA’s bloodborne pathogen standards lay down the guidelines for employers to protect their workers from these life-threatening pathogens.

  • Establish a written plan to eliminate or minimize occupational exposures.
  • Implement the use of universal precautions.
  • Make available hepatitis B vaccinations to all the workers with occupational exposure.
  • Employers must update the plan annual to reflect all the changes.
  • Use labels and signs to communicate hazards.
  • Identify and use engineering controls to isolate or remove the blood borne pathogens hazard from the workplace.
  • Identify and ensure the use of work practice controls for reducing the possibility of exposure by changing the way a task is performed.
  • Make available post-exposure evaluation and follow-up to any occupationally exposed worker who experiences an exposure incident.
  • Provide personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, gowns, eye protection and masks.
  • Provide proper information and training to workers.
  • Maintain worker’s medical and training records.
